How listings are vetted

  1. 1

    Start from the record

Every listing begins as a public business record on Google Maps.

  2. 2

    Keep the roofers

Only businesses whose main category is roofing stay, with at least one review. Duplicates are merged.

  3. 3

    Read the website

Each business's own site says which work it takes on. Those services are ticked on its listing.

  4. 4

Say when we do not know

No website to read means "no information yet" on the listing, never a guess.

Every listing starts as a public business record on Google Maps. We keep businesses whose main category is roofing, that have at least one review and whose record has been updated in the last twelve months. Duplicates are merged. Businesses that turn out to be consultancies, cleaning firms or lead-generation pages are taken out.

We then read each business's own website and tick only the services it names itself, such as flat roofing, leadwork or chimney repairs. Insurance, guarantees and trade memberships are shown as the business states them. We do not check them, so ask to see the certificate.

Owners can claim a listing to correct details or add photos. A person checks every claim. Published by BeClicked Online.

How to choose a roofer in Buckinghamshire

Start with the job

Roofers do not all take on the same work. Some only repair, some mostly fit flat roofs, and a few handle leadwork or chimneys as a speciality. Each listing here ticks the services the business names on its own website, so check that your job is ticked before you ring. Where a listing reads "no information yet", the website did not say, and a phone call settles it.

What the rules ask for

Re-covering a roof normally needs Building Regulations approval, and the insulation is usually improved at the same time. A roofer registered with CompetentRoofer or NAPIT can certify a roof replacement themselves. Otherwise the work goes through building control. Milton Keynes City Council covers Milton Keynes, Newport Pagnell and Olney, and Buckinghamshire Council covers the rest of the county. Ask which route your roofer uses, and keep the certificate, because you may be asked for it when you sell.

Planning permission is a separate matter. Re-roofing a house in a way that does not change how it looks will usually not need it, and roof windows are usually allowed within set limits. Flats are treated differently.

Scaffolding and safety

The Health and Safety Executive treats all work on roofs as highly dangerous, even a job that takes a few minutes, and says sloping roofs need scaffolding to stop people and materials falling from the edge. A quote for work on a pitched roof should say how the roofer will get up there. If the scaffold has to stand on the pavement, the scaffolding company needs a licence from the council first.

Bats and old cement roofs

Bats and their roosts are protected by law, and repairing or replacing a roof is one of the jobs that can disturb them. If you think bats use your roof, the National Bat Helpline gives free advice before work starts. Old cement sheet roofs on garages and outbuildings can contain asbestos. Ask how the roofer will handle and dispose of the sheets.

Reading a rating

Every listing shows the Google rating beside the number of reviews behind it. Read the two together. A perfect score from three reviews tells you less than a slightly lower score from a hundred.

What to ask on the first call

Ask for a written quote that lists the work, the materials and the access. Ask to see the public liability insurance certificate. Ask what the guarantee covers, how long it runs and whether an insurer backs it if the firm stops trading. Ask who will be on the roof, and who deals with building control. Get the answers in writing before you agree to anything.

Frequently asked questions

How are roofers listed on National Roofer?

Every listing comes from a public business record on Google Maps. We keep businesses that are open, have reviews and have roofing as their main category. Then we read each business's own website and tick the services it names.

Does it cost anything to be listed?

No. A basic listing is free and stays free. Businesses can pay for a featured position or a premium listing, and those are marked wherever they appear. Paying never changes a rating.

Why does a listing show an illustration and not the roofer's own photos?

We do not copy photos from a business's website or Google profile. Until an owner claims the listing and sends their own, the picture is an illustration of the kind of work the business does, and the caption says so.

What does "no information yet" mean on a listing?

It means the business's own website did not say whether it offers that service, or there was no website to read. It does not mean the answer is no. Ring the business and ask.

Does National Roofer check insurance, guarantees or trade memberships?

No. A listing shows what the business states about itself. Ask to see the insurance certificate, and get any guarantee in writing, before work starts.

Which areas does National Roofer cover?

Buckinghamshire, including Milton Keynes, is the first county. Further counties will be added one at a time.

How do I correct or remove a listing?

Use the contact page and tell us the business name and town. Corrections and removals go live at the next rebuild of the directory, normally within a week.
